Ardenne Abbey

The Abbey Today

Since 1996, the IMEC has carried out the restoration of the Abbey with Bruno Decaris, the chief architect at the French Historic Monuments Department. Building work was funded by the Lower Normandy Regional Council and the French State (Regional Office of Cultural Affairs of Basse-Normandie). This restoration included the two main spaces of the Abbey:

    • The abbey church, turned into a 80 000 book library, provides researchers a peaceful and calm environment, just as the conventual buildings used to be,
    • The large farmyard and the tithe barn host events, seminars and exhibitions.

After several centuries, the Abbey plays its intellectual and cultural role again and the activities of the buildings symbolically respect the distinction between the secular and the regular.
